Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) Information

Parking and Commuter Services uses both mobile (vehicle mounted or handheld) and fixed (building or pole mounted) Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) to improve the efficiency of parking operations and to help keep permit costs as low as possible. There has been recent public concern over some agencies’ use of ALPRs and ALPR data from Flock Safety. Parking and Commuter Services does not use ALPRs or any other hardware or software from Flock Safety.

The ALPR systems that Parking and Commuter Services uses and the use of resulting data are strictly regulated by campus policy.

ALPR data is not shared with other units except:

  • In cases of a significant and articulable threat to health or safety
  • Where there is explicit consent of the data subject(s)
  • Where required by law, court order or search warrant

ALPR data retention is limited to 24 hours after the close of the business day except:

When aggregated and de-identified data originating from ALPR systems may be retained for analytical purposes, such as modeling parking occupancy, parking lot turnover, etc.
