Parking Permits
Under University of California policy, anyone who parks at UC San Diego must pay a fee to help support construction, maintenance and administration of parking facilities.
Parking Payment Required 7 Days a Week
You must have a valid parking permit associated with your license plate or choose daily or hourly visitor parking.
- Main campus — 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., weekdays, 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
- Scripps Institution of Oceanography — 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., 7 days a week
- UC San Diego Health – Hillcrest — 24 hours/7 days a week
- UC San Diego Health – La Jolla — 24 hours/7 days a week
- No parking fee is required on university holidays
Please note: Purchase of a parking permit does not guarantee a space to park. Additionally, a lack of space is not considered valid justification for violation of UC San Diego parking regulations.
Permit Options
UC San Diego uses license plates as parking credentials to eliminate the need for a physical permit. Parking staff check the license plates of parked vehicles to verify parking rights.

What Permit Fees Fund
The revenue generated from parking permits is used primarily for the development, maintenance and operation of parking facilities. Additionally, it supports other sustainable mobility options that aim to reduce environmental impact and distribute parking demand, ultimately lowering development, maintenance and operating costs.
To fund upcoming parking improvements, including the replacement and expansion of parking facilities, Transportation Services will be implementing modest annual parking permit rate increases each year.
A – Faculty and Senior Staff

Valid M permits allow parking in Motorcycle designated zones only 24 hours daily.
AMYRV – Retiree/Emeritus
Eligibility: The Retiree/Emeritus Permit is available to individuals who have retired from UC San Diego with at least 20 years of university service (Retirees) or 10 years of university service (Emeritus). Retirees and Emeritus permit holders receiving compensation from UC San Diego through paid employment are not eligible, though university-sponsored volunteer work does not affect eligibility. First time applicants must provide official documentation verifying their years of service.
Options: Free virtual permit that expires on June 30 of calender years ending in 0 or 5. Renewal is required to continue parking privileges.

Using Your Parking Permit
Permit holders are responsible for following parking rules and instructions when parking at UC San Diego. Follow these guidelines to avoid parking citations.
- Permit upgrades are not valid in visitor, patient, or reserved parking spaces, including spaces posted "A Permit Required 24 Hours a Day, 7 Days a Week."
- Permits are:
- Never valid in restricted or undesignated parking spaces.
- Non-transferable unless registered for carpool or department use.
- UC San Diego property—resale is prohibited.
- Not a guarantee that a space will be available. A lack of space is not considered valid justification for violation of UC San Diego parking regulations.
The permit holder is responsible for the cost of the permit from the time of purchase until it expires or you cancel it.
Note: Parking on university property is at your own risk. Always lock your vehicle and remove or conceal valuables.

Adding a Vehicle to Your Permit
- Login to our online system.
- Click “Modify Account Vehicles” at the top of the page.
- Click “Permanent Change” or “Temporary Change”.
- Add your vehicle information (license plate number, state, year, make, model, color, vehicle type) and click “Confirm.”
- You will receive an alert that your vehicle has been associated with your permit(s). Confirm your permit number is listed.
- If your permit number is not listed, contact a Parking and Commuter Services for assistance.
Official Business Access
Parking and Commuter Services offers 2-Hour Official Business (OB) supplement access for departments to facilitate employee parking while conducting travel and time-sensitive official university business. The access is not intended to accommodate an individual’s personal parking needs and may result in a substantial fine if abused.
A valid UC San Diego “A,” “B” or “R” parking permit with OB access allows parking in these areas for a period of 2-hours:
- “A” faculty spaces
- “V” visitor spaces
- Service Yard spaces
- UC vehicle spaces
- Where posted: “A” parking permit required 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
The Official Business supplement is NEVER valid in disabled or reserved parking spaces.
Application Process
A department appointed designee is responsible for completing and submitting the Official Business Access Application for consideration. Once submitted, Parking and Commuter Services will review and grant departments access to purchase 2-hour physical OB supplements on an annual recharge basis.
Approval Considerations
Approval for official business access is determined on predictable and consistent parking access needs using these criteria.
- Does the applicant have meetings or university-specific commitments several times a week that require them to drive their personal vehicle to locations away from their primary worksite?
- Could other transportation modes reasonably support this movement? Examples: Walking, shuttles, use of university vehicles, shared scooters, etc.
- Are the meetings scheduled so tightly that walking to/from the nearest available parking for the employee permit type is unfeasible?
