Register Your Ride
UC San Diego offers two registration options, depending on the type of device you ride. Registration helps identify your device if it is lost or stolen and supports a safer micromobility environment for everyone on campus.
1. E-Scooters
If you ride an e-scooter on campus, you must complete UC San Diego’s e-scooter registration process. This registration is specifically designed for e-scooters and is required for all UC San Diego affiliates who ride an e-scooter on campus.
2. Bikes, E-Bikes and Other Personal Mobility Devices
If you ride a bike, e-bike, electric skateboard, OneWheel or similar personal mobility device, you can register your device directly with Bike Index using the form below.;
Why Register Your Micromobility Device?
UC San Diego is proud to partner with Bike Index, a widely used micromobility registration service that helps reunite owners with lost or stolen devices. Registration is available for bicycles, e-bikes, e-scooters, electric skateboards, OneWheels and other personal mobility devices.
Registering your device provides a record of important information, including its serial number, which can be used to file a police report if it is stolen. Registration also helps law enforcement identify recovered devices and return them to their owners.
Why is E-Scooter Registration Different?
E-scooters present unique safety concerns on campus. As e-scooter use has increased, UC San Diego has also seen an increase in crashes and related injuries.
Rather than prohibit e-scooters, UC San Diego has established an e-scooter registration process that combines rider education and device registration. This approach allows affiliates to continue using e-scooters on campus while helping riders understand safe riding practices and their responsibilities when sharing campus pathways and roadways.
Together, education and registration help protect riders, pedestrians, cyclists, and the broader UC San Diego community while also making it easier to identify and recover lost or stolen devices.
Register Your Micromobility Device Online
- Find your serial number.
- On most bicycles, the serial number is engraved on the bottom bracket (as shown right). Simply turn your bike over and look between the pedals. Some bikes have multiple sets of numbers. Enter each set of numbers/letters.
- Some skateboards, scooters and other non-bicycle mobility devices have serial numbers. If your device does not have one, leave the serial field blank. Bike Index recommends adding as many other details and pictures to the registration as possible.
- Complete the Bike Index form below and include a picture of your device. Register skateboards, scooters and other non-bicycle mobility devices under the “personal mobility device” category.
- You will receive an email from Bike Index asking you to confirm your device in their system. Confirm your device and create your Bike Index account.
- Pick up your registration sticker at Campus Bike & Skate, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, by showing your Bike Index confirmation email.
- Complete the registration process by logging into your Bike Index account and linking your new sticker to your account
- Affix the sticker to your device. You want people to know that your device is registered. Sticker placement:
- A common decal location is on the top side of the top tube beneath the seat to avoid wear and weathering and to make removal difficult. This helps UC San Diego Police and potential thieves easily spot the registration sticker.
- Do not affix the sticker to the removable seat post or the seat itself.
- Place your sticker in plain view on skateboards, scooters and other non-bicycle mobility devices so that it can be easily identified by police and potential thieves.
- Once you complete this step, your device will be fully registered. You can add more devices to your account with pictures of your device's distinguishing features.
