Transportation Technology Updates

Transportation Services is replacing legacy enterprise systems and adding new tools that simplify and elevate the user experience for individuals and department customers. Key updates are described below.

Cellular Coverage Improvement

As part of our effort to enhance service, safety and security across the parking system, indoor Distributed Antenna Systems (iDAS) are now live in Transportation Services facilities. Our iDAS provide coverage for all major carriers throughout these parking facilities: Theatre District, Scholars, Torrey Pines Center South, Hopkins, Pangea, Campus Point East/West, Athena, South, Mesa Canyon, Gilman and First Avenue.

What This Means for You

Inclusion of IDAS means no more dropped calls, interrupted Zoom meetings or difficulty with EV charging or parking payments. Most importantly, it means that if you need to make or continue an emergency call while entering or inside one of our facilities, you will be able to do so. If you routinely conduct virtual meetings on the move, you may want to adjust settings on your mobile device to prioritize cellular connections over Wi-Fi to avoid impacts when transitioning from or passing buildings with Wi-Fi coverage.

Campus Map Update

We’ve been collaborating with our colleagues in Operations Management and Capital Programs to support their development and deployment of a new, more functional, campus map that’s anchored by GIS. Explore the new map at campusmap.ucsd.edu. The new map includes an accessible view that better supports people who use screen readers or other assistive technology.

Web links and bookmarks to the prior map at https://maps.ucsd.edu/ should be redirected https://campusmap.ucsd.edu. When creating new content or sharing directions with campus guests, please use the new map.

One-Stop Transit Information

UC San Diego is delighted to be leading a collaborative effort to bring real-time transit information and multi-agency trip-planning for our entire region together in one place. Our new mobile-optimized web page includes MTS, NCTD and Triton Transit fixed route service, along with ride booking for Triton Mobility and NightRide, Triton Transit’s after-hours microtransit offering. The page provides support for more than 25 languages. A public beta is now live at wayfinder.ucsd.onebusawaycloud.com.

Parking Management Software Replacement

Like other campus functions, parking uses a specialized Management Information System. We’ve outgrown the current parking system and we're replacing it with a more flexible and user-friendly application that will allow Parking and Commuter Services to better support the campus community. Transition from the legacy system to the new platform will occur on July 1, 2026. We deeply appreciate the partnership of our colleagues in Operations Management and Capital Programs and campus Information Technology Services who have been instrumental in this project.

What This Means for You

As a part of the transition, payroll deductions for parking will be processed after the fact, rather than ahead of time. For employees that are paid biweekly, the last deduction out of the old system will be reflected on the May 20 pay day and the first deduction from the new system will be reflected on the July 29 pay day. For employees that are paid monthly, the last deduction under the old system will be reflected in the June 1 pay day and the first deduction under the new system will be reflected on the July 31 pay day.

  • If you purchase parking by payroll deduction, you will need to re-enroll. The re-enrollment portal will open on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. Watch your email for a link and instructions.
  • If you purchase parking via the ParkMobile app, there is no change at this time.
  • If you purchase short-term parking through the campus Parking Portal, you will be redirected to the new platform, beginning July 1.

No changes to the schedule for transit pass deductions will occur at this time.

Automated License Plate Readers

Parking and Commuter Services uses mobile (vehicle mounted or handheld) and fixed (building or pole mounted) Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) to improve the efficiency of parking operations and to help keep permit costs as low as possible. There has been recent public concern over some agencies’ use of ALPRs and ALPR data from Flock Safety. Parking and Commuter Services does not use ALPRs or any other hardware or software from Flock Safety.

The ALPR systems that Parking and Commuter Services uses and the use of resulting data are strictly regulated by campus policy.

ALPR data is not shared with other units except:

  • In cases of a significant and articulable threat to health or safety
  • Where there is explicit consent of the data subject(s)
  • Where required by law, court order or search warrant

ALPR data retention is limited to 24 hours after the close of the business day except when aggregated and de-identified data originating from ALPR systems may be retained for analytical purposes, such as modeling parking occupancy, parking lot turnover, etc.

What This Means for You

You may see license plate readers on Parking and Commuter Services vehicles and in or on the approach to campus parking facilities. Know that any license plate data collected is not shared, is encrypted both in transit and at rest, and is promptly deleted.

Video-assisted Parking Regulation Enforcement

Parking and Commuter Services uses cameras and software from Hayden.AI to perform video capture and analytics, alerting parking personnel to parking violations for the issuance of citations by mail. Video-assisted (semi-automated) parking regulation enforcement and the issuance of citations by mail is authorized for bus zones (bus stops and bus lanes) by AB917 and for micromobility facilities (e.g., bike lanes) by AB361. Other types of parking regulations may be issued by mail only when the driver departs before the parking official can safely place the citation notice on the vehicle windshield.

These handling and retention procedures are used for video and images captured under this program:

  • Video and images that do not identify a probable violation are deleted when the bus goes out of service for the day, meaning that the maximum retention is less than 24 hours.
  • Video clips/images are flagged as probable violations that do not result in citation issuance are retained for 15 days or less.
  • Video clips/images that do result in citation issuance are retained for no more than six months.
  • Faces appearing in video clips/images are blurred, as are license plates of vehicles that are not flagged for potential parking violations.

What This Means for You

You may see front-facing cameras on Triton Transit vehicles, video from which is used to assist with parking enforcement. Know that video from this system is anonymized through blurring, except for data immediately relevant to evaluation and potential issuance of a parking citation for a bus or bike zone violation, and that data that does not result in a citation is deleted promptly. If you park or stand your vehicle in a bus lane, bus stop or bike/micromobility lane, video information may be used to issue a citation by mail.
