Emergency Ride Home

Stuff happens. When it does, we’ve got your back.

We appreciate our fellow Tritons who leave their cars at home and eliminate the traffic, parking and environmental impacts of driving alone.

If you took a lower-impact mode to campus from your off-campus residence and you’re unable to travel home in the same way due to an emergency, you may qualify for an Emergency Ride Home (ERH) at no cost or a significantly reduced cost.

Emergency Ride Home for Faculty and Staff

ERH for faculty and staff is provided in partnership with SANDAG through iCommute’s Guaranteed Ride Home Program. You must register in advance for ERH coverage, kind of like an insurance program, but at no cost to you.

ERH coverage is for reimbursement of costs associated with your emergency ride home. Rides must originate from your work location and may only be used to get home or to the location of the participant’s parked car (e.g., a park-and-ride lot or carpool partner’s home).

iCommute determines qualifications to participate in the program and has sole authority over whether rides are reimbursable. For current program details, view the participation guidelines and agreement (English | Spanish).

Emergency Ride Home for Students

For the purpose of the ERH for Students program, an emergency is defined as a situation that:

  • Could not be predicted or avoided, and
  • Makes it impossible to travel home the same way that you traveled to campus

Qualified rides meet the definition of an emergency (above) and:

  • Originate on campus, and
  • Terminate at the rider’s off-campus residence, or
  • Terminate at a hospital or urgent care center, or
  • Terminate at the rider’s vehicle, parked at an off-campus park and ride or carpool partner’s residence

Transportation Services funds and administers ERH for Students. We recognize that student budgets can be tight so rather than operating on a reimbursement basis like most ERH programs, we provide an upfront credit for ERH rides and require users to validate their ride after the fact. If you claim a ride and do not validate your ride within 72 hours of claiming it OR if your ride is deemed ineligible, you will be charged the $10 value of the ride credit.

Active students living off campus are automatically enrolled in the ERH program and may claim emergency rides through the Transportation Services customer portal. After navigating to the portal:

  • Select “Get Permits.”
  • Verify or update your local address.
  • Select “Emergency Ride Home E-Voucher $0” from the products menu.
  • Select or add your personal vehicle information and license plate. Unfortunately, collecting this is a system requirement, but it could save you time if you drive in the future. If you do not own a vehicle, enter your UC San Diego student ID number instead of the license plate number and make up the vehicle specifics.
  • Select “Pay Now” to complete the transaction. You won’t be charged anything unless you’ve also selected a paid product in the same transaction.
  • Your receipt will display a Lyft code. Enter it into the Lyft app to receive $10 off your emergency ride home.
  • Watch your email. We will send you a survey to validate your emergency ride within two business days.
  • Complete the survey within 72 hours of the time it was sent to you.
  • Watch your email again. We will send you either a confirmation that your ride was covered or, in the event your ride was deemed ineligible, a bill for the $10 value of your ERH e-voucher.

Lyft is the exclusive partner for ERH for students. If you are unable to use Lyft, contact Triton Transit (6 a.m. to midnight weekdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends, excluding holidays) for assistance, (858) 534-7422. Outside of Triton Transit’s service hours, contact UC San Diego Police for assistance, (858) 534-9255.

Students living in on-campus housing do not qualify for the ERH program. Use Dial-A-Ride Transit or the Safety Escort Program for assistance getting from your on-campus location to your on-campus residence.

If your emergency occurs while working on or off campus, you may qualify for reimbursement under iCommute’s Guaranteed Ride Home program. Advance registration for the Guaranteed Ride Home program is required. iCommute determines qualifications to participate in the program and has sole authority over whether rides are reimbursable.
