Construction Information

Building construction and infrastructure improvements affect parking and transportation on both the La Jolla and Hillcrest campuses. For highly impactful projects, we include summaries of transportation options and interventions below. For less impactful projects and brief disruptions associated with major projects, we use campus notices and First to Know alerts to keep the campus community informed about changes.

Stay Informed

Be prepared for changes related to construction by subscribing to First To Know. You'll receive timely notifications about changes to the parking lots and shuttle routes you use most.

Hillcrest Redevelopment

Over the next decade, the entire Hillcrest campus will be redeveloped. Started in November, 2021, Phase One develops replacement parking, a new outpatient pavilion, significant utility work and a road realignment.

Phase One is expected to be the period of maximum disruption to parking and transportation resources, including significant surface parking losses while new parking is developed.

Hillcrest Express Shuttle

To help mitigate the loss of parking and provide more sustainable transportation options to our colleagues on the Hillcrest campus, UC San Diego Health and Transportation Services launched the Hillcrest Express, direct shuttle service every 15 minutes between the Old Town Transit Center and the Hillcrest campus. This free service more than doubles the frequency and capacity of transit service between the Hillcrest campus and the Old Town Transit Center. Shuttles run weekdays from 6:08 a.m. to 9:08 p.m., excluding university holidays.

In addition to offering a great commute option for individuals working on the Hillcrest campus, the Hillcrest Express schedule is coordinated with the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley to provide efficient transfers for a reverse commute to the La Jolla campus or midday travel between the La Jolla and Hillcrest campuses.

Park Free at Old Town

The Old Town Transit Center offers free parking for commuters with 24-hour on-site security. The center features more than 400 parking spaces and, as of December 2021, has significant parking availability throughout the day. There is no fee to park at Old Town and we encourage members of the UC San Diego community to park and ride the free Hillcrest Express or park and carpool with one or more colleagues to the Hillcrest campus.

When you park at the Old Town Transit Center, you can cancel your payroll-deduction parking permit and still have access to A or B parking on the Hillcrest campus on the days you need it through our Flexible Parking Program.

Try MTS Transit + Hillcrest Express

The Old Town Transit Center is served by a host of transit options, including the UC San Diego Blue Line trolley, the Green Line trolley, COASTER regional rail and bus MTS routes 10, 30, 35, 28, 9, 8, 44, 105, 88, 83, 84x. With transfers to the Hillcrest Express, all of these are now credible commute options for the Hillcrest campus.

Try Transit Risk Free

Transportation Services makes it easy to try transit with the free FaSt Pass Trial Program and COASTER Pass Trial Program. With these programs the first three months of bus and trolley service or first two months of COASTER regional rail are absolutely free for eligible employees. After that, bus and trolley riders can enjoy a more than 60% discount for the next three months and a 25% discount going forward.

When you switch to transit, you can cancel your payroll deduction-parking permit and still have access to A or B parking on the Hillcrest campus on the days you need it through our Flexible Parking Program.

Carpool or Vanpool

In addition to being able to share gas and parking costs, carpoolers and vanpoolers can access premium reserved parking on level one of the Arbor Parking Structure. If you’ve got a total of two or more people in your car (including the driver) when you arrive on the Hillcrest campus, you qualify for Arbor reserve carpool parking at B permit rates and will be able to park right next to the medical center. Register your carpool by emailing iride@ucsd.edu with the employee ID numbers of the carpool participants.

We know that there will be days when you and your carpool partner need to travel separately so you’ll still have access to A or B parking on the Hillcrest campus on the days you need it through our Flexible Parking Program.

Get Rewarded

When you walk, bike, take transit, carpool/vanpool or work remotely, you can earn incentives for reducing your commute impact. If the environmental benefits and parking savings weren’t enough, we’ve got a host of incentives and rewards available through the Triton Commuter Club. Log the days you choose a lower impact option to earn discounts and entries in our monthly and quarterly drawings, including our quarterly electric bike giveaway!
