Alternative Commuting Video Contest

Background

In fall 2017, UC San Diego conducted its first Process Palooza, a daylong conference and competition focused on continuous improvement through Lean Six Sigma techniques. Three teams tackled a real Transportation Services’ business challenge: Informing new employees about campus commuting options during the orientation process. Participants analyzed and re-imagined this critical function. Learn more about the competition.

As a result, Transportation Services embarked on a series of initiatives aimed at improving communication about commuting and mobility options available to the campus community. One of the team recommendations was to create a video for use during orientation.

Objective

Produce a short video for new employees, students, faculty and staff that:

At the end of the video, viewers will be linked to the Transportation Services’ portal to select a commuting option.

Entry Rules

  • UC San Diego students, faculty and staff can participate.
  • Videos can be of any genre, format and aesthetic, including dramatic, artistic, documentary, etc.
  • All submissions must:
    • Have a title
    • Be no longer than three minutes
    • Provide links to entries uploaded to Google Drive, Dropbox, YouTube, Vimeo or similar platform using the online submission form
  • Submissions may not include any copyrighted music, audio/video clips, characters, logos or other protected Videos may include only “open source” music or music composed and played by the individual or team member(s) submitting the video.
  • A signed model release form must be provided for each person appearing in the video.
  • Upon submission, copyright transfers to UC San Diego Transportation Services.

Judging and Prizes

All submissions will be reviewed by a judging panel and prizes will be awarded.

  • First place
    • iPad, annual SPIN membership and $25 Lyft credit for up to three team members, or
    • A $500 bookstore credit
  • Second place
    • Annual SPIN membership and $25 Lyft credit for up to three team members, or
    • A $300 bookstore credit
  • Third place –
    • Annual SPIN membership and $25 Lyft credit for up to three team members, or
    • A $200 bookstore credit

The winning videos will be announced during Welcome Week Fall Quarter 2018 and posted on the Transportation Services website.

How to Enter

  1. Create your video, ensuring that it follows all of the rules listed above.
  2. Upload your video to YouTube or Vimeo.
  3. Scan and upload signed model releases for each actor to Google Drive, Dropbox or similar platform.
  4. Complete our Online Video Contest Submission Form. You will have to answer a few questions and provide a link to your video and model releases.
